Well, I'm not disputing what you may recall, nor do I intend to argue the point, but Word always has been a styles-based program. I've just tested in Word 2004, Word 2008 & Word 2011 to confirm. There's simply no way for the program to recall what direct formatting may have been applied in a previous paragraph once different formatting has been introduced.
